He forms a business partnership with an African warlord and his psychotic son. I was captivated by this film and felt that Nicholas Cage was a good fit for this calm character. It is sad to think that this was based upon truth, as showing how gun running is such a big money grab and a deal broker, that governments do not want it stopped.
This character had the riches and lifestyle, but really wasn't able to have a life along with the danger of the deal.

Written, produced, and directed by Andrew Niccol in 2005, this crime drama depicts the life of a illegal arms dealer played by Nicolas Cage.
Although supposedly inspired by the stories of several real-life arms dealers and smugglers, the film appears a fake to me.
The conflicts portrayed in the film seem like real conflicts in real countries, particularly those in Lebanon, Sudan, Afghanistan, Liberia, Colombia, and Sierra Leone.
Conversely, however, the image of Interpol as an acting security agency turns out entirely fictional.
The bad script seems to relfect on this fiction.

Oh dear, Nicolas Cage picks movies with the same unfortunate ineptitude he has displayed in choosing investment advisers. In his race to the bottom he really wallowed in the excrement of a box office stinker. This mess has all the recent hallmarks of a Cage movie:- uninspired script, bad acting, gratuitous mindless violence, tedious voice-over narrative and cheesy special effects. After 25 minutes I ran out of patience and skipped to the final scene. I guess Mr Cage is still in the movie business because Francis Coppola feels so sorry for him.

Really good movie. Impressed with Nic Cage and the cast!

A more exciting and truly original arms-dealer flick than "War Dogs 2016." The story obviously was highly fictionalized but ringed true, at least more credible than recent fake news: no bull, just the facts. Per wiki: "Plot details on the illegal arms market, particularly regarding purchases for West Africa in early 1990s, are closely based on real stories and people originating from the former Soviet Union."

Well made movie. Nicolas Cage still looks good at this point. He is pretty sane in this one with no outrageous outbursts.

This is the 4th time I checked out this DVD as I find the amount of action and story line interesting about gun sales worldwide. I just wish I knew how much of it is actually true. Even though the guy says at the beginning of the movie he is just going to tell what occurred, I still wonder. And, at the end it says this story is based on an actual event. One just never knows how much to believe. I would guess 80% of it is true based on what I read in worldwide news & having traveled outside the USA to Europe, Asia, Australia, Spain, but never made it to Africa nor eastern Europe areas. Africa has been, and to me still is, a politically unstable area of the world. Thus, I would believe people like him need to exist so countries around the world (as Yuri puts it) "can conduct a respectable war".

Interesting concept, a little slow at times but a fascinating look at the weapons industry and specifically the way guns have become ubiquitous in some parts of the world.

Very original, interesting commentary on the unusual subject of illegal global arms sales. I loved it, but obviously you should be prepared for a predictable amount of violence.

Yuri Orlov: [narrating] There are two types of tragedies in life. One is not getting what you want, the other is getting it.

Tons of quotes in IMDb:

Opening monologue:
There are over 550 million firearms in world-wide circulation. That's one firearm for every twelve people on the planet. The only question is... how do we arm the other eleven? You don't have to worry. I'm not gonna tell you a pack of lies to make me look good. I'm just gonna tell you what happened. My name is Yuri Orlov. When I was a boy, my family came to America. But not all the way. Like most Ukrainians, we gathered in Brighton Beach. It reminded us of the Black Sea. I soon realized we'd just swapped one hell for another. Even in hell, an angel sometimes makes an appearance. I'd worshipped Ava Fontaine since I was 10 years old. Of course, she didn't know I existed. I was starting to think she had a point. For the first twenty-odd years of my life... Little Odessa was to me what it is to the Q train... the end of the line.

Huh, you have not seen the news. You know they accuse me of rigging elections. But after this, with your Florida and you Supreme Court of Kangaroos,
Here I'd been running away from violence my whole life, and I should've run towards it. It's in our nature.
The earliest human skeletons had spearheads in their rib cages.
RUF - the Freedom Fighters. Every faction in Africa calls themselves by the noble names. Liberation-this Patriotic-that, Democratic Republic of-something-or-other. I guess they can't own up to what they usually are Federation of Worse Oppressors than the Last Bunch of Oppressors. Often, the most barbaric atrocities occur when both combatants proclaim themselves "freedom fighters."
Hey. You trust me, right? She looked me directly in the eye... the way I've looked in the eyes of a thousand customs officials... government bureaucrats and law enforcement agents. Yes, I trust you. And she lied without flinching.

Tell me I'm everything you despise. That I'm the personification of evil. What? Responsible for the breakdown of the fabric of society and world order. I'm a one-man genocide.
They blame me for everything, those hypocrites. Their hunt for a witch. Witch hunt.
Are you paying attention? Or are you delusional? You have broken every arms embargo written. There is enough here to put you away for consecutive life sentences. You are going to spend the next ten years of your life going from a cell to a courtroom before you even start serving your time.
One thing I do understand for certain... is that Vitaly broke the cardinal rule of gunrunning. Never pick up a gun and join the customers.

At four and a half months old... a human fetus has a reptile's tail... a remnant of our evolution. Maybe that's what I couldn't escape. You can fight a lot of enemies and survive, but if you fight your biology,
you always lose.
I do rub shoulders with some of the most vile, sadistic men calling themselves leaders today. But some of those men are the enemies of your enemies. And while the biggest arms dealer in the world is your boss... the President of the United States, who ships more merchandise in a day I do in a year... sometimes it's embarrassing to have his fingerprints on the guns. Sometimes he needs a freelancer like me to supply forces he can't be seen supplying. So... you call me evil, but unfortunately for you, I'm a necessary evil. I would tell you to go to hell. But I think you're already there. Pleasure doing business with you. Most people are happy just to get out of jail. I expect to be paid to leave.
